This spread works similar to the simple 3 card question spread, in which you're reading the cards three at a time. With this spread, we're able to see more from a few different angles.
Begin with viewing it just as you would normally, in sets of the threes - the three cards from top to bottom on the left are representative of the past, the center vertical three the present, and the final three on the right the future. Top horizontal row is what’s out of control, while the bottom row is what’s under control.
You can read the sets from top to bottom, left to right, or diagonally. Each card will work with the next, and you’ll start to piece together the whole story. For added clarification, you can also use a method called “knighting”. If you are familiar with chess, you know the knight is able to move in a very specific fashion - in an L shape. Since you read Lenormand cards in pairs, the cards that make this L can be read together. In the example shown above, the Fish knights with the Stork.
Past, Present, and Future spreads can take a moment of studying before the picture starts to become clear. Keep in mind the basics, and take in two cards at a time as you would in most spreads. Because of the nature of Lenormand cards, I generally do not focus on “houses” or card combinations like the ones mentioned (top to bottom, left to right, diagonal, and knighting). I am not against this method of reading, it is simply not my style and tends to muddy the reading. Your basic 4 methods are generally more than enough to clarify.
Practice this spread before tackling the big Grand Tableau - I often use this spread instead of a Grand Tableau, as it will give you a much quicker, shorter term prediction. The Grand Tableau can often predict up to a year’s worth of events.
